In the tradition of Spring cleaning, I have updated my website. I taught my first class last night at The Manhattan Writers Den. I love meeting other writers and talking about the struggles we all face when trying to bring something to life on the page. The most important thing is to keep writing, and let your “rough” draft be rough. Everything can be smoothed out during rewrites. I’m currently working on a novel set in Florence, Italy. Although I was only able to visit Florence for a day last summer, I love imagining myself walking through the gorgeous city, and living amongst great architecture and works of art. I’m learning to enjoy the process of letting my characters loose and seeing what they say and do. Sometimes huge sections have to be cut or tossed out during rewrites, but a first draft is where you let it all hang out. That can be frustrating if you’re too hard on yourself, or if you expect your first drafts to unfold brilliantly on the page. Writing is a messy business and the creative mind doesn’t like to be constricted. Letting go and permitting yourself room to make mistakes (that can be fixed later) is the only way to go.

If you haven’t entered the contest I have going on, there is still time. Winners will be chosen May 1st. Hope your “Spring Cleaning” brings you a fresh perspective on life, whether you’re tossing out clothes you haven’t worn in awhile, or a relationship that’s run its course, sometimes all you need is a clean slate. Once in awhile treat your life like an Etch-a-Sketch and shake it up.

I am in the process of updating this website. Stay tuned. When it’s completed, I will kick it off with a new contest.

I am going over the proof sheets for The Things I Do For You, my new novel about a husband who buys a lighthouse behind his wife’s back and turns it into a bed and breakfast. It will be released July 31, 2012.

I finished the 2013 novella, A Kiss Before Midnight a romance spanning twenty years that takes place in New Orleans. A little bit of love, a little bit of voodoo, a whole lot of jazz. It will be out in March of 2013.

I have started my next novel about a married woman who discovers her husband has a mistress in Florence Italy. She flies there to confront them, then kicks the mistress out of the flat and takes over her life. Title is still under discussion.

I have started THE MANHATTAN WRITERS DEN in New York City. If you live in the Big Apple (or know anyone who does) and would like to take a 6-week writing workshop from me, please visit themanhattanwritersden.com for more details.
